Mangusta 165 REV – Over the top

Overmarine’s Mangusta 165 REV is a superyacht that will make your heart race. We tested her in Viareggio and she did over 35 knots

Maurizio Balducci is a man of his word. He had told me that if the opportunity arose to try out his Mangusta 165 REV, he would call me. Trying out a 50-metre sports yacht with a displacement of over 300 tonnes is certainly not something a journalist like me gets to do every day. So I got on the phone, cancelled my appointments and went straight to the Overmarine shipyard in Viareggio. It was super exciting because I had a personal record on the line – before this 165, the longest I had ever steered was a 140-foot boat.

In the lounge, the large living area is furnished with comfortable side sofas, positioned in front of the large full-height windows to enjoy the view from inside. The carpet that enhances this area is a wide and delicate palette of eleven different colours, selected and shaded from light blue to antique pink. The dining table is in black polished Avola marble, while the bar unit is in cream Moka stone and light Emperador marble with a decorative glass front.

What the Mangusta 165 REV looks like

The engine room houses four Rolls Royce MTU engines, each developing 2600 hp, which, combined with four Kongsberg-Kamewa waterjets, give her a top speed of 35.4 knots. The sheer power of this superyacht isn’t fully appreciated until you get to the helm. The amount of instrumentation is extraordinary. The dashboard is packed with the best technology on the market and feels like a cargo ship ready to go anywhere.

The master suite covers 92 m2 on two levels, with privacy ensured by the use of oval section slats covered in vintage pink nubuck. The entrance to the bedroom comprises a study with an armchair and a sofa area with a table in white onyx. The area below is dominated by the bed and an armchair upholstered in camel leather in front of the windows.

The owner’s suite, with its hull windows, provides adrenaline rushes while the superyacht is travelling at speeds over 30 knots.

THE INTERIORS ARE COMPLETELY CUSTOM-BUILT AND HAVE BEEN HANDLED BY THE M2ATELIER STUDIO.THE FLOORS ARE MADE WITH THE FINEST LUXURY WOOD ITALY WOODS.

The biggest thrills come on the upper deck when the boat hits the waves at over thirty knots. That is when you realise how majestic she is. The way she sits on the water shows how a man can take on the immensity and power of the sea. The wind paints your face with an expression of wonder. You feel nature at your core and the thrill leaves you stunned.

The guest staterooms on the lower deck have been furnished with materials that are consistent with the rest of the boat, the only changes being the silk georgette marble in the bathroom and the 3D textured leather for the bed heads.

To design the hull, Overmarine Group engineers used an engineering mathematical approach to calculate the structural behaviour by breaking it down into a significant number of elements. The result was a reduction in the time needed to produce the technical aspects and a high level of precision in the final build. A great deal of attention was paid to weight reduction to make a significant contribution to reducing diesel consumption.

The hull, the result of years of hydrodynamic testing, offers maximum hydrodynamic efficiency at all speeds and ensures comfort on board, with good load capacity and easy handling. Thanks to the optimisation of the composite and carbon fibre hull and weight, together with an improved propulsion package, fuel consumption has been reduced by around thirty per cent compared to the first-generation Mangusta 165.

IGOR LOBANOV HAS CREATED A DESIGN BASED AROUND AN AGGRESSIVE PROFILE, WITH DYNAMIC LINES INSPIRED BY 1930S SPORTS CARS, WHICH SUCCESSFULLY CONCEALS THE AMOUNT OF SPACE AVAILABLE TO THE OWNER AND GUESTS ON BOARD.

At 30 knots the boat has a range of eight hundred nautical miles, while at 20 knots economy cruising, total fuel consumption is around 800 litres per hour and the range increases to over one thousand miles. At 11 knots, the 165 REV consumes the same amount of diesel as a displacement boat, and thanks to a stabilisation system that works both at anchor and underway, you can travel at this speed in complete comfort. The interior can also be exciting, as the forward owner’s suite has windows along the sides of the hull. This is great when you are at anchor in a picturesque bay, or when you are doing over thirty knots. It is as if you are immersed in the sea as it rushes past you at full speed.

The aft beach club is safe and well-equipped with a large water area. The garage opens to the side and is large enough to accommodate a six-metre tender and two jet skis.

The flexibility and multi-functionality of the master stateroom in particular, but indeed of the whole yacht, contribute to much-needed mental and physical wellbeing. The sea and nature all around you have an enormous regenerative power, helping you to find the balance between body, mind and energy and to experience well-being. Feelings are strong here, leaving you truly relaxed and at ease. Inside and outside are in constant visual contact with each other and, above all, with the sea. They are a feature of life on board, allowing the owner and guests to never forget that they are on a yacht that provides a sense of connection with the water.

THERE IS A LOUNGE AREA FOR OUTDOOR RELAXATION, WITH SOFAS, SUN LOUNGERS AND A JACUZZI, WHILE THE SUN DECK IS DESIGNED FOR SOCIALISING, WITH A BAR AREA AND SOFAS.

The interiors are entirely bespoke, designed by the m2atelier studio in collaboration with the shipyard’s design team. Light but warm and inviting colours have been chosen for this particular boat, and this is reflected throughout the boat. Elements that stand out from this muted and soft colour palette include (on the main deck) the forward wall of the saloon, which is clad in vintage pink wood with a reed-like effect, the gunmetal lacquer that completely covers the entire staircase, the beautiful intricately designed wallpaper – which looks like a painting – in the bathroom and the wall of the entrance to the master cabin.
