Tommaso Cascella, Walking on the water

Tommaso Cascella looks at painting and sculpture as natural languages, which come from a multigenerational inheritance. His painting tends towards a tridimensional transposition, combined with his Bronze sculpture

CASCELLA’S WORK HAPPENS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN PAINTING AND SCULPTURE, where the different forms chase each other and intertwine in a unique narrative: the three-dimensional images of sculpture are echoed in the scrawls that enliven the canvases. In reality, in his work painting and sculpture are two facets of the same thought: a look at the essence of things. Reality becomes poetry. From the eighties, slim pieces of iron emerge from the canvas. Then they push their way further out and fill the space. Later on, when the skin of the painting becomes too narrow, metal acquires an autonomy of its own, becoming a work in which signs, once sketched on canvas, take on life, body, substance. Painting becomes sculpture, the sign becomes three-dimensional substance and plays with its own shadow on the surface of the painting. Sculpture is born from the painted sign and traces imaginary volumes in space.

Tommaso Cascella was born in Rome in 1951 son of the painter Annamaria Cesarini and the sculptor Pietro. Now he lives and works between Bomarzo and Rome. Together with his first wife Emma Politi, thanks to his printworks he had long dialings with publishing working closely with artists and poets. In 1981 he found “Cervo Volante” a magazine of Art and Poetry. The management of the first issues was by Adriano Spatola, later it would be by Edoardo Sanguineti and Achille Bonito Oliva. In 1985 he exhibited for the first time at the Luigi De Ambrogi Gallery in Milan. Among his latest solo exhibitions there is: Erbario at Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, Genzano in Rome in 2013; Fiori d’Autore at the Miralli Gallery in Viterbo in 2014 and in the same year there was the Tommaso Cascella exhibition at the Galleria Comunale in Marina di Ravenna. In 2015 La parola disegnata, at the Bibliothè Art Gallery in Rome with the sonorous poetry of Venera Maglia. In 2010 he attended the Biennale in Venice exhibiting the Cielo rovesciato sculpture. To date, Tommaso Cascella has done one hundred and twenty solo exhibitions.
