The Mangusta GranSport 33, built by the Overmarine Group, owned by the Balducci family, is the first model fitted with four 1,000-horsepower Volvo Penta D13s and IPS 1350 transmission with tractor propellers
by Fabio Massimo Bonini
JUST GLIMPSING IT FROM AFAR IT IS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO RECOGNISE THE CLEAN, elongated lines of the Mangusta, the brand of the Overmarine Group which has located forty per cent of its boat output in the United States. Owning one will just be a dream for most people, but will be a reality for the first two buyers of the new GranSport, which has a length overall of 33.3 metres, and a beam of nearly 7.5 metres and a draught of just over 1.80 metres, which means it can go just about anywhere, even where there is shallow water which in this part of the ocean means sailing untroubled throughout the clear turquoise waters of the Bahamas.
In the stern, guests are accommodated in a spacious and well-equipped cockpit with a dining table and bar area. The lounge, which is on the main deck, is large and is lit by two full-height windows, two of which can be opened to give natural ventilation.
It was designed by Alberto Mancini, who drew up the exteriors. Elegance and completely Italian solutions for the American owner who has worked with the interiors department at Overmarine Group and with Alberto Mancini to choose the décor. He wanted nearly complete customisation.
Perfect Lady, as the boat is named, has been designed around the owner’s children and grandchildren and you can feel that immediately from the platform that it will be the family’s “beach”. Once it has been electronically extended, it turns into an enormous area fitted with a shower, music speakers and an outsize swimming ladder, with large steps and solid railing, which is also entirely electronically operated. Behind the platform, hidden by a curtain, is the garage. It only holds a tender fitted with a jet motor, and no jet skis as the owner thinks they are too dangerous for children. But the very substantial areas would certainly hold a lot more toys.
The garage covers 28 square metres, and can hold a 5.65m tender and two jet skis, an extraordinary amount of space – and indeed the boat is one of the best in its class for this. The stern platform can be extended so that you can have a large area to socialise close to the sea.
The secret for all this space, which is also noticeable in the interior guest areas, lies in the unusually small size of the engine room. It is, however, more than enough to hold the four Volvo Penta IPS 1350s, the largest on the market, which power the GranSport 33 and can make it accelerate to a top speed of over 25 and a calmer cruising speed of twenty-one knots.
Stefano Arlunno, the president of Mangusta Yachts for the Americas showed me this super yacht and told me that it was the first time that the yard had worked with Volvo Penta to use the IPS system with tractor propellers. With the performance, speed, stability, low fuel consumption, manoeuvrability and very user-friendly technology (such as the joystick and dynamic positioning system) this is a decision that has got people enthused.
The 56-square metre flybridge can be configured as being either open or closed. The buyer of the first boat off the line has gone for the closed option, so it has what is a sky lounge, with a living and television room that is enclosed, as part of a new and interesting solution.
We left the platform using the stairs on the side at the stern and reached the large cockpit. As well as a dining table, large sofa, bar counter and barbecue, this area also has the controls used during mooring, which are hidden inside the railing on the port side. That was another part of the customisation that the owner wanted so as to be able to moor alongside his private quay at his home, which, for practical manoeuvrability reasons is always on the port side. The extraordinary combination of matt black paint and the gloss of the ceilings stand out strongly from the white of the hull, creating a very elegant first view.
The interiors department at Overmarine Group has worked together with the designer Alberto Mancini and the owner to decide upon furniture and décor. Luxury Wood Italy, a company specialized in high-quality wood working, has made the floors of the interiors.
And you can enter the lounge without having to go up a step, as you normally would. The most immediately striking feature is the height of the ceiling and the big windows that can all be opened to let in a large amount of light. The lounge has been designed to welcome lovely chats. In the same area there is another dining table, that can seat at least eight.
From there you go through to the master suite, which is very large, as much as forty square metres, the largest on a boat of its type. It has a centrally-located bed, many drawers all over the room, a vanity table for the lady of the boat, a TV screen that unfolds from the ceiling on a hinge and a single bathroom that is not just large, but has the most beautiful shower I have ever seen, separated from the cabin by LCD glass that can be darkened with a click, ensuring complete privacy.
The master suite covers forty square metres, and is located in the bows – it is very roomy, comfortable and has excellent natural light.
We then went down to the level below, where there is guest accommodation with two twin rooms with beds that can be joined to become doubles and two single rooms with a second bed hidden in the wall which can become bunk beds for children. Every cabin is equipped with video screens that are invisible until turned on. What really strikes you here, once again, is the height and room, and – as we said earlier – that is a consequence of the small amount of space taken up by the engine room. In the bathrooms of the cabins, which are fully equipped, I noticed a lack of marble, which is another touch of sobriety and all part of the simplicity of the overall approach.
The lower deck is entirely set aside for four guest cabins which can be set up in different ways according to the wishes of the buyer.
Going onto the upper deck you find another area that is dedicated to children, with the swimming pool, a large lounge and the long bar table linked to the pool, which was created so that parents can enjoy a cocktail while keeping an eye on the little ones swimming. Behind the bar counter there are two sliding glass doors which mean you can go into a skylounge that is completely closed and fitted with air conditioning. That means you can experience the top deck in every season, and of course you can helm the boat from there, thanks to a steering position that folds away to stop children touching it. Inside the lounge there are still more sofas and television screens, and this is clearly another area that has been set aside for the daily life of younger guests. A few steps down from the sky lounge and you reach the bridge, an area packed with technology so you can have everything under control, from helming to on-board systems, and ensuring that there is the highest possible level of safety.
From the flybridge, you can easily get to the bow, where you find – on the same level – a further area for socialising with a swimming pool with a jacuzzi and a sun area, in front of which there is a lounge area that is equipped with a sofa and table.
In the bow, well apart from the equipment used for anchoring, there is a large area with a jacuzzi pool, sun pad and a lounge which – for once – provides an adult-only space.
It is a boat that is set to have great success thanks to a surface area that is really incredible considering its tonnage. It should be borne in mind that the first two were sold off plan to Americans, who normally have rather different tastes to European buyers. So, we should offer our compliments to the owner and salute this “Perfect Lady” who will spend the whole of the winter in the Caribbean and the summer on the north-east coast of the US, at the Hamptons.
Engine room
The Mangusta GranSport 33 has a power package that generates a top speed of 26 knots thanks to four Volvo Penta D13s each developing 1,000 horsepower, or 735 kW, at 2400/min, and IPS 1350 transmissions. The range is around 340 nautical miles at cruising speed.
The Mangusta GranSport 33 is a sporty boat that is comfortable at the same time, and has a strong character and timeless elegance: it is a good combination of style and technology.
