Amer 100 Quad, who dares wins

The motto of the British Special Air Service seems perfect to tell you the philosophy of the Amer 100, powered with 4 Volvo Penta IPS 1050 engines. Being 30 meters long, the 100 Quad is the longest motoryacht in the world equipped with this propulsion system

MICHIO KAKU ONCE SAID THAT: “When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Many didn’t believe it was possible to install Volvo Penta IPS drive on a 30 metre pleasure boat. But you only need to see it to realise that they were wrong to doubt. Powerful, fast and always perfectly trimmed, the Amer 100 Quad has proved to be a design with a high technological content that perfectly combines form and function.

The shipyard has made very precise technical choices such as using the IPS 1050 Rating 4, which can satisfy the working requirements for light planing boats in commercial use. Maximum cruising speed, manoeuvrability, comfort and fuel consumption are factors that affect buyers’ decision when purchasing a boat.

In our test drive in French waters outside Cannes we sailed at 10 knots burning less than 70 l/h and with a range of approximately 1,450 miles, or at 20 knots with an overall consumption of approximately 380 l/h and a range of 526 miles. The top speed is noteworthy: in test conditions with about 20 people on board, we reached 27.5 knots.

The 100 Quad has an overall displacement under 85 tons, and at sea, trim is always good. The lines of the hull and the engineering have reached on optimal balance between weight, performance and consumption, using engines which are not particularly powerful, as it can sail at 12 knots with one engine and burning 90 litres for 100 nautical miles. Thanks to the use of the Volvo Penta joystick and the typical performance of the IPS in manoeuvre, sailing in tight waters is easy and, above all, safe. Opening the throttle one can barely hear any noise or feel any vibrations, acceleration is always quick and changes of route fast and precise.

The boat is never challenged, the electronic management of the IPS adapts the tilt to the rpm. With the engines running at 2,000 rpm, it took about sixty seconds to turn a full circle with a diameter smaller than 100 meters. The level of noise stays low, in all parts of the boat, as are vibrations, even when at speeds that are more taxing for the structure. Amer Yachts has dealt with weight distribution in a particularly effective manner, with technical materials and building solutions that are fit for the purpose and able to guarantee a long life for the boat.

The exterior is defined by strong lines and large side windows that extend to the bow allowing plenty of light below deck. The main helmstand is on the upper half-deck, allowing the master suite to use the entire bow of the main deck. The particular boat we tried belongs to a private owner who has personalised every single detail.

This is a boat made with great attention both to technical issues and to aesthetic and functional aspects. Comfort on board is increased by the use of sound and vibration absorbing materials and with stabilising devices for use when the boat is at anchor in a harbour or in a port.
