The Aficionados all around the world will remember 2016 as the 50th Cohiba Anniversary
THE COHIBA BRAND WAS OFFICIALLY BORN IN 1966, AT THE WISH OF COMMANDER FIDEL CASTRO, after Bienvenido Pérez, his body guard, offered him a cigar made by Eduardo Rivera. In 1964, a small factory was set up, equipped for the exclusive production of cigars which were gifted to Heads of State and Diplomats visiting the island. In 1967, production was moved to a new factory called El Laguito, under the management of Eduardo Rivera. Within it, a new format was created, the Laguito No 1, measuring 192mm by 38 in breadth, and without a band to its pig tail. In 1969, this mysterious cigar was adorned with the name Cohiba around its first band, totally different to those in use in our day in that it was made up of two colours, black and yellow, and distinguished with a semicircle containing a black and white window on the upper part and the word Cohiba below. After a few years, the band of the Laguito No 1 changed design again and became similar to that in use today. When the Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín painted the fourth portrait of Fidel Castro on the occasion of his 70th birthday, a brilliant idea came to him: wooden boxes made with prized materials at the Factory of the Guayasamín Foundation, to make up sizable humidors for preserving the large “habanos”. In 1996, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Cohiba brand, a prestigious humidor was introduced, the Cohiba Guayasamín, produced in a series of only 30 examples and accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist Oswaldo Guayasamin and by Commander Castro. The relief on the upper part is embellished with 24 carat gold leaf, a work of art by the same Guayasamín. Inside, there are 90 cigars: 10 Lanceros, 10 Coronas Especiales, 10 Espléndidos, 10 Robustos, 10 Siglo I, 10 Siglo II, 10 Siglo III, 10 Siglo IV and 10 Siglo V. One of these splendid and exclusive commemorative humidors makes up part of the marvellous collection of Alain Proietto, owner of the Cigar Must brand, and it may be admired, together with other numerous and important rare productions connected with the Cuban cigar, at La Casa del Habano in Lugano. In 2007, ten years later, the Cohiba Guayasamín was revived once again and produced in a series of only 50 examples, accompanied by a certificate signed by Commander Fidel Castro. Inside, there are still 90 cigars: 15 Lanceros, 15 Coronas Especiales, 15 Espléndidos, 15 Robustos, 15 Piramides and 15 Siglo VI. The whole production range of the Cohiba brand is today amongst the most sought after, with aficionados and collectors spread out throughout the world, due to the meticulous care taken over both their manufacture and packaging. It is possible to admire and purchase the whole of the current Cohiba brand range from Cigar Must, as well as numerous and exclusive special products.
