A new 35-footer has entered the historical Zaffiro line of the Italian yard. With two Volvo Penta engines of 260 hp each it reaches the top speed of 34.5 knots. It’s registered as a watercraft
WE TESTED THE Z35 IN SAN GIORGIO DI NOGARO. It was sunny, the sea was calm and there was no wind. The perfect weather conditions to test a boat in early March, at least for whoever is onboard. The boat is equipped with twin Volvo Penta D4 engines of 260 hp each and EVC system. Before casting off we check the fuel and water onboard: there is 60 l of fuel and no water. The engines have Duoprop stern drives, G5 propeller and a gear ratio of 1.85:1.
We leave the long canal that has lead to us to the sea at 1000 rpm and less than 7.2 knots, but out in the open, aided by calm seas, we go in search of the top performance, considering the fact that the complete hull, engines and equipment exceeds 8.5 tons. It planes at around 2200 rpm and a speed of about 16 knots, with noise coming from the engines of about 90 dBA. In this moment, the engines are burning a total of 43 l/hr. At 2500 rpm, we cross the threshold of 20 knots, still with decidedly low fuel consumption, while in the range of 3100-3200 rpm we get beyond 30 knots and a consumption bearing on 75 l/hr. We keep the trim tabs in neutral up to 3500 rpm, obtaining a response of 34 knots, 93 dBA of noise and 110 litres of global consumption.
It is at this point that we bring the tabs to +3 hoping to squeeze out a whole lot more, but we note that revs go up to 3630 rpm, while the speed increases by just half a knot and consumption rises to 103 l/hr. The hull, designed as usual by Aldo Cranchi, proves itself nicely under acceleration and in softness of handling, and at speeds where you can have some fun without sacrificing confidence in its reactions. I veer at 30 knots and feel a very natural, smooth response, enjoyed thanks to full visual control of what is happening around me, which allows me to close the turn without any hesitations.
The Z35 has a sporting soul with elegance blending perfectly with understated but significant performance and consumption that guarantees autonomy at full speed for about 6 hours. This is a sports cruiser to be appreciated at all hours of the day with a bright interior illuminated by rectangular glass windows set into the hull sides. If you love the sun, you can opt for both fore (of more than 2×1.70 m with removable cushions) and aft sundeck, or you can enjoy the cruise seated in the living space created behind the steering position which includes, in addition to a C-shaped sofa, an extra sofa on the other side of the helm for a couple of people. From here, a windshield wraps all around, but can be opened centrally, where a few steps allow direct access from the cockpit to the foredeck, avoiding the need to go round on one of the outer deck-ways. Thanks to the high-backs of the couches and the encompassing windshield, you feel totally protected, and so, even with children on board, there is little need to worry. A corner galley complete with hob, fridge and sink offer total autonomy for lunch on the water, while a large aft platform, accessible through a door on the starboard side of the cockpit, facilitates getting in and out of the water for bathing and arrangement of the tender, with a hydraulic lift optionally available.
Below deck, you will be surprised by the welcome ergonomic use of the available space, right from the ceiling height, which everywhere is as much as 1.90m. Floorboards are in scratch-resistant and anti-mould pre-treated light wood, which contrasts with furniture of the same tone pleasantly mixed with other darker shades. The dinette features an “L” shape sofa with foldable table which can turn into additional berths. Opposite the table there’s the galley with a two burner cooker and microwave oven. The interior layout also includes two cabins and a bathroom. All the windows and portholes have Venetian blinds to completely darken the rooms. The bathroom serves both the cabin. The wc and the shower are separated from the basin by a glass door.
