The long-awaited launch of the B.Yond 37M, Benetti’s new four-deck Voyager, born from the vision of Paolo Vitelli, Founder and Chairman of Azimut|Benetti Group, and architect Stefano Righini, took place yesterday at the Livorno shipyard.
The B.Yond 37M marks a return to steel for Benetti, which has preferred it to fibreglass. An unprecedented choice for yachts of this size, which takes us back to the 1950s, when the yard switched from wooden to metal construction. A choice justified by the desire to represent durability and solidity, qualities typical of a yacht designed for long voyages.
However, this trend is combined with the ability to minimise environmental impact. In fact, thanks to Siemens Energy’s E-Mode Hybrid system, on-board energy consumption is optimised according to specific usage profiles. The data collected by Benetti show a reduction in CO2 and NOx emissions never before recorded in a yacht of this category.
Paolo Vitelli, Founder and Chairman of the Azimut|Benetti Group, said: “I am delighted to present one of the most innovative yachts ever built. Its hybrid system, which allows long-range sailing while respecting the environment, and its design that integrates four decks in just 37 metres, make it a dream for the modern owner who wants to sail the world with family and friends. I wanted to imagine a record-breaking boat, and now here it is”.
B.Yond 37M, this is how emissions are reduced
Benetti has made use of SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalytic filters, a technology that can almost completely eliminate nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine emissions. It is called ‘selective’ because it acts specifically on these substances.
Also on board the B.Yond 37M is the aforementioned E-Mode Hybrid system from Siemens Energy, based on a technology already applied in the automotive sector for Euro 6D diesel engines. The system is based on an integrated Add On ‘crew friendly’ architecture, which relies on a conventional system: thus, one can easily switch from mechanical to electric propulsion and vice versa, without the intervention of specialised personnel on board.
Four navigation modes
One of the four possible navigation modes is Full Electric, with zero emissions. An exclusive plus that not only protects the environment but also allows the B.Yond 37M to access protected marine areas or areas normally closed to motorised navigation. The lithium battery pack also makes it possible to stay at anchor in Hotel Mode with zero emissions, keeping the generators switched off and battery-powering the main on-board utilities.
With a 300 kW/h battery pack it will be possible to enjoy an ‘at anchor’ autonomy of up to 8 hours during the day and 12 hours at night. Battery recharge time is only three hours.
Estimating an average annual use of 1,000 hours, of which 400 hours at sea and the remainder at anchor, a reduction in consumption and CO2 of up to 24% and a reduction in NOx of up to 85% can be achieved.
It is no coincidence that the B.Yond 37m is a Voyager: up to 8,200 nautical miles of range at 9 knots in Eco Transfer mode, with the two diesel generators switched off and only one propulsion engine running. Here the reduction in consumption and CO2 emissions is up to 16% and NOx up to 80% compared to traditional propulsion.
Four decks designed by Stefano Righini
Righini’s concept envisages a fourth deck to elevate all the vessel’s noblest areas, thus opening up continuous panoramic views.
The surprises already start from the Lower Deck, dedicated to the service area with “walking wine cellar” and “cold room”, a feature certainly not common on this size. The Main Deck is dedicated to the guest sleeping area, with four suites accessible from a panoramic lounge with generous windows, which Benetti has named Playroom. Going up onto the Upper Deck, the living area opens out onto the sea at 360 degrees. The Upper Deck, the Bridge Deck, is for the owner’s use, while the Sun Deck hosts a dining area with an outdoor pantry and table, sheltered by a hard top.
There are many possibilities for customising the layout: the Main Deck, in addition to the four guest suites that are particularly spacious for a 37-metre yacht, can optionally contain the owner’s cabin or the Playroom with a panoramic view. In the Bridge Deck, the owner’s cabin or a panoramic veranda can be accommodated on request. In the Lower Deck, the gym can be replaced by a sixth guest cabin. Another great new feature is that the captain has two cabins, one full-size located close to the wheel house, and another very spacious one adjoining the crew quarters. Should the captain choose to use the one closest to the wheel house, the second one could become a seventh guest cabin.
The interiors
The interior design is by Benetti architect Mauro Izzo. The shipyard’s choice is to give owners the chance to express their personality on a yacht to be experienced as if it were their second home.
A desire intercepted by Giorgetti, chosen by Benetti to take care of the furnishing of the first B.Yond 37M. The materials chosen are declined in natural colour palettes, enhanced by touches of blue that, among fabrics and accessories, stand out in contrast to the optical white of the walls and recall the colour of the sea.
