Somnium is a completely customised superyacht built in the Netherlands by Feadship De Vries for a Northern European buyer. The external lines have been designed by the Studio De Voogt, while the interiors are the work of FM Architettura
by Francesco Michienzi
To take three generations of his family on holiday, the buyer wanted a boat that could meet all of their various requirements, including a passion for sports cars – which had to be expressed in the yacht’s dynamic lines – and it had to be able to do long cruises around the world. The choice fell upon the Somnium, a sports yacht that is 55 metres long overall, with a maximum beam of nearly ten metres and an internationally-certified displacement of 740 gross tonnes. Constructed in Feadship De Vries’ Aalsmeer yard in the Netherlands, it was designed by Studio De Voogt, while the interiors are by FM Architettura.
FM Architettura was founded by architect and superyacht interior designer Francesca Muzio in 2010. Francesca’s extensive work features more than one hundred projects of superyachts. The headquarter is in Ancona in the region of Le Marche, where more than 200 local artisans, who are the finest in the country for their work with leather, glass, timber, metals and textiles, all elements incorporated in interior design, use collaborate with FM Architettura. FM just opened an Atelier in the heart of the Milano design district (Brera). It is very intimate and able to show the clients some examples of design and quality.
The owner, along with his representative Ron Kleverlaan from the Waterman Marine Consultancy, chose Feadship after careful research as to which yard could meet the requirements for a custom build that didn’t compromise on quality.
For the interiors, the owner gave a very specific brief to Francesca Muzio, the founder of FM Architettura, that was focused on the creation of a welcoming space to escape from daily life and be able to spend quality time together with loved ones. The owner took a direct interest in the yacht’s development and regularly visited the yard to see how work was progressing.
The hull is in aluminium and was designed to be as efficient as possible in the water, just as a supercar is on the track. The external lines are very clean, with a strong design that frames the different sections in a balanced way. They interact perfectly with the interiors, which present a style that suggests the intimate feel of a house. The boat includes a full-beam owner’s suite, with an adjoining balcony, and four spacious guest suites on the lower deck. The bridge foredeck is a spectacular living space designed for socialising and getting together, one of the reasons which brought the owner to commit to the building of the Somnium. Francesca Muzio’s approach to the interiors was directly inspired by the owner and the colours of the Galapagos Islands.
BRILLIANT, SHINY AND VIVID TONES PLAY WITH DARKER HUES
THAT SUGGEST VOLCANIC ROCKS THAT TWINKLE IN THE LIGHT
OF THE SUN AS THEY RISE FROM THE SEA.
For over ten years, the Italian studio has been creating and putting together interiors for yachts, private houses, residential tower blocks and luxury hotels, with the support of expert Italian craftsmen. Try to imagine that you have finally left the city behind and, after having travelled a long way, you have arrived in the Galapagos Islands, a paradise that has over fifty native species, and thousands of marine iguanas, giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies.
It is a joyful celebration of colours and contrasts created by textures that show the essence of a true paradise. It was with that in mind that the interiors were created for the Somnium, a name that means “dream” in Latin. At first sight, the very technological exteriors have harnessed that dream. It is a secret dream that only a few will be able to capture as if it were in the moments between deep sleep and waking. Dreams take place in the atmosphere created by a concept of interiors built around the same features that make the Galapagos Islands unique. Brilliant, shiny and vivid tones play with darker hues that suggest volcanic rocks that twinkle in the light of the sun as they rise from the sea. The view from inside the Somnium blends with the view of the sea and the exterior.
On the main bridge, aft of the cockpit is the swimming pool. It is a luxurious area where you can sit down and relax. The intense colours, the luminous orange shades and the blue, cold azure tones and the various colours of the sea recreate the feel of the waters and landscape of the Galapagos Islands and take you away on an unexpected journey within the boat itself. The strength of the contrast and the great customisation of the interiors lies in the softness of the fabrics and the structural design of the furniture. Bookshelves were custom-designed just for this boat.
SOMNIUM, DESIGNED BY THE STUDIO DE VOOGT, WAS BUILT WITH AN ALUMINIUM HULL AND SUPERSTRUCTURE, WHILE THE DECKS ARE TEAK.
The boat is equipped with a beauty salon, beach club, gym, deck-top jacuzzi, WiFi and air conditioning.
The Somnium was built with an aluminium hull and superstructure, while the decks are teak. It is powered by two V-10 MTU diesel motors, each developing 1,224 horsepower. At 2250 rpm it comfortably does twelve knots and gets to a top speed of fifteen knots, and the 71,000-litre fuel tank means it has a range of up to 4,500 nautical miles at cruising speed. The water tanks can hold around 15,200 litres. It has been built to comply with BV (Bureau Veritas) classification rules, with ✠ HULL and ✠ MACH certification, and is also MCA compliant.
AT TWELVE KNOTS, THE BOAT HAS A RANGE OF AROUND 4,500 NAUTICAL MILES, THANKS TO DIESEL TANKS THAT HOLD A TOTAL OF 71,000 LITRES.
