450R Mercury Racing

We tested it in various configurations with two, three, four and, on board a 59-foot Cigarette, even six engines. Needless to say, this was the craft that really grabbed me. Anyone like me who loves shooting through the waves out on the open sea could not let this opportunity pass.

The feeling of speed and power you get at the helm is indescribable. The 18-tonne Cigarette is made of carbon fibre and fibreglass, reinforced with Kevlar. With six Mercury 450 R engines its power-to-weight ratio is 6.6 kg for every available hp – this statistic alone gives you an idea of the type of craft we had at our disposal.

With a total power of 2,700 hp, we managed to top 100 mph. The Mercury 450R was designed and developed entirely in Wisconsin on a dedicated production line, and is based on a sophisticated 64° V8 design. It includes a Quad Cam Four Valve aluminium head with double overhead camshafts, chain-driven and run in an oil bath, and Inconel exhaust valves.

The supercharger is water-cooled to reduce the temperature of the intake charge and to increase the power. The engine is also fitted with an intake attenuator, tuned to cancel out the loud high-frequency supercharger noise while retaining a typical V8 sound. Twin charge air coolers reduce the temperature of the air intake to further increase its density and resulting power output.

The carefully considered design and placement of the new supercharger and charge air coolers allow the 450Rto use the same slim-line cowl as the 300 Rmodel, while incorporating higher flow intake vents. The Mercury Racing engineers have not neglected any aspect of performance in their design of this outboard. The maximum range extends from 5800-6400 rpm, ensuring the propellers achieve optimal acceleration, efficiency and top speed.ù

Mercury Transient Spark technology applies pre-programmed timing advance to optimise torque output for stronger performance. Adaptive speed control with custom Mercury Racing calibration automatically holds the engine rpm regardless of load or condition changes, such as rough water, tight turns, tow sports and lower planing speeds, without requiring frequent adjustment of the throttle control. The electronics and other engine components are designed and positioned to create the tightest package possible while maintaining good service access.

The 450R has a 115 A alternator, ideal for power-hungry electronics. When the idle charge battery-management system senses low battery voltage it automatically increases engine idle rpm to boost alternator output until the batteries are charged to the appropriate level. For routine engine oil checks and top-ups, allyou need to do is open the cowl service door, without having to remove the cowl itself. An integrated latch and carry handle facilitates cowl removal when servicing is required

The Sport Master gearcase, designed for boats capable of speeds of 70+ knots,features low water pick-ups and a leading edge designed for maximum efficiency and, for the450R application, a new one-piece 1.25-inch diameter stainless steel propshaft. From single-engine boats to multi-engine sport boats, the Sport Master enhances boat handling, speed and efficiency. The cambered skeg counteracts prop torque for improved performance and handling in single-engine applications. All 450Rgearcases have a 1.60:1 gear ratio for enhanced acceleration and speed.

The 450R model is compatible with Mercury Racing Zero Effort Digital controls or any Mercury Marine digital control system, which can throttle up to six outboards with a single lever in some applications. Digital throttle and shift technology enhances the high-performance boating experience by providing smooth shifting and instant response, as well as eliminating cable rigging and maintenance.

Optional Joystick Piloting for Outboards(JPO) is available for boats rigged with two to six outboards and provides fingertip 360-degree boat control for docking and tight manoeuvring, plus the convenience of Skyhook® anchoring features and integrated auto piloting. The Mercury VesselViewsystem can simultaneously monitor the RPM, speed, fuel flow and efficiency, trim and more on up to six outboards on an intuitive seven or nine-inch touchscreen display. VesselView also enables Advanced Sound Control, a dual muffler system with two options on start-up: ultra-quiet or sporty.
