Columbus Yachts launched the gigayacht Columbus 80 meters in Ancona. Giuseppe Palumbo, president and managing director of Columbus Yachts, has underlined with great pride and satisfaction the importance of this launch, which is the result of the work carried out by the Group’s craftsmen in record time: only 27 months.
Featuring classic and contemporary lines, the Columbus 80 is 79.50 meters long and 13.00 meters wide overall. The naval architecture and the design of the exteriors are by Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec. The interior design is by Francesco Guida.
The displacement hull is made of steel, whilst the superstructure is on aluminum. The construction process required great organizational skills and coordination between the two production sites of Naples and Ancona. The lines are characterized by a great formal balance of almost Renaissance inspiration and an understated sense of elegance, giving the Columbus 80m the harmony of a yacht that harks back to the celebrated ‘ocean liners’ of the 1950s and 60s, while promising to keep up with the times, even in the years to come. These guidelines underpin the longitudinal sweep of the bow, the white color of the hull broken only by the big windows and the transverse flaring of the various decks.
The interior is focused on an extremely contemporary style, the tones are neutral and unobtrusive, the decorative elements have simple and clean lines. Even fine materials used for coatings and furnishings are matched with the aim of creating a modern and sophisticated atmosphere.
The spaces are split over six levels, from the under-lower deck to the sun deck, in a rational arrangement that offers the owner, guests, and crew the utmost comfort and convenience at sea. A circular glass-walled lift connects the five main decks, starting from the lower deck, which is the preferred access point to the yacht for passengers arriving by tender, up to the sun deck, with a spectacular opening onto the outdoor area.
The entire level on the upper deck is dedicated to the owner. The suite itself consists of a big double bedroom area with the bed arranged in the bow and a fantastic 180-degree panoramic view, an area furnished as a private studio, and a third area for any guests. The outdoor private areas, on the other hand, include a big terrace in the stern, as well as a balcony in the bow that offers an unbroken view of the horizon. Six big double suites provide guest accommodation in the forward section of the main deck, while a seventh cabin on the lower deck can be used as a ‘wildcard’ for last minute guests. One of the most distinctive spaces on Columbus 80m is located on the sun deck: the stunning panoramic pool, which is seven meters long and fitted with a counter-current swimming system. It is fed from above by an eye-catching waterfall, which also acts as a virtual partition, separating the pool from the hydromassage tub. Located inside the mast structure, the tub is closed on three sides, conjuring up the magical sensation of a grotto hidden behind a blade of water.
The stern section of the lower deck is also set aside for guests. In it, the stern wall and the two side walls open outwards, extending the deck area from 100 to 200 square meters and creating a big water level beach club with sun loungers, a bar, and a toilet. The two garages at the side host two tenders (10 and 7.5 meters) and are equipped with a guest boarding platform, with direct access to the lobby and the main lift. The forward section is set aside for the crew, with a big galley/living area and eight cabins for 19 people. When not in service, the crew can relax in their own gym on the under-lower deck, which is connected by a service lift to all the other decks so that the crew can easily move around the yacht without disturbing the owner or guests. The amenities also include two forward garages for a tender/rescue boat and three jet- skis, a helipad, a sauna in the beach club, a gym on the fly deck and a cinema and multimedia room on the upper deck.
Columbus 80m megayacht is powered by two 2240 kW (3044 hp) engines with shaft transmissions, installed in the midsection of the lower deck.
“Over 50 years of experience in building and refitting large ships, allows us to enter the megayacht segment with full confidence in the results we can achieve, thanks to the skills we have acquired during this long journey, and to the excellence of our Company, which we are proud of” stated Giuseppe Palumbo, CEO of Columbus Yachts.
“The building of the Columbus 80m has been possible thanks to the largest network of shipyards in the Mediterranean, specialized in the building, refitting and maintenance of yachts and ships, including commercial ships and cargo vessels”. Francesco Carbone General Manager of Columbus Yachts.
“The implementation of the manufacturing process has been a challenge from several points of view: structural, engineering, constructive and logistical” Gianpaolo Lapenna, Project and Product Director of Columbus Yachts.
Palumbo Superyachts was founded in 2008 when the Columbus Yachts brand was founded. Three years later, in 2011, Columbus Yachts launched its first superyacht, for the occasion named “Prima” (which means “First”).
Currently, Palumbo Superyachts includes a representative office in Monaco and a logistics network of five Mediterranean shipyards (Ancona, Naples, Malta, Savona and Marseille) operating under five world-famous brands: ISA Yachts, Columbus Yachts, Mondomarine, Extra and Palumbo SY dedicated to refit.
Palumbo Superyachts opened in 2019 with the launch of the new Isa Alloy 43 meters M/Y AGORA III, the largest private superyacht with a permanent base in Japan from spring 2019.
With the launch of the Columbus 80, the group confirms its willingness to develop new models for the market of gigayachts, such as the 120-metre Columbus Classic, whose naval architecture and external lines are entrusted to Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec. The new Columbus Sport 50 meters by Luca Dini will also be delivered in spring 2020 and under construction in Ancona.
By August 2019 another four EXTRA Yachts will be launched (EXTRA 86, EXTRA 86 FAST, EXTRA 93 and EXTRA Alloy 130). The brand, rib of ISA Yachts, saw the light last year with the launch of the first EXTRA 76.
Palumbo Superyachts’ pride and joy is certainly the ISA Yachts, which sees three new models under construction at its Ancona headquarters with 2020 delivery: the ISA GT 45 metres, the ISA Classic 65 metres and the ISA GT 67 metres. The ISA “Crossbow” 100 metres is a model with sporty lines made by Hydro Tec.
Mondomarine, the last brand acquired by Palumbo Superyachts in 2018, is responsible for the refit of superyachts from 28 to 58 metres, followed by the Palumbo SY division. Projects include a Mondomarine “CLASSIC” line and a new DISCOVERY line.
Palumbo SY, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts, specialized in refit and repairs, currently has 45 megayachts, from 28 to 100 meters, under construction at the shipyards of Ancona, Malta, Naples, Marseille and Savona.
